Furniture Repair Crown · Wylie, Texas
The Shop on Regency Drive. Where Old Pieces Are Put Right.
A restoration workshop in Wylie, Texas. Wood, finish, fabric and mechanism, worked by hand under one roof.
The pieces
What Comes Through the Door
A chair that racks. A veneered lid lifting at its corner. A bloom clouding a table top. A clock that stopped one winter and never started again.
Little of it is valuable the way an auction house means the word. It is the piece that stood in the front room of the house you grew up in. Putting it right is a different trade from making something new, and it is the trade behind this bench: 35 years of it, 24 of them in the Dallas Fort Worth area.
The work does not stop at the wood. Stone is honed on the same bench where the drawers are reglued, and a phonograph keeps its case and its motor in one shop rather than travelling between two.

Hand Methods, Where They Earn It
Veneer is relaid rather than replaced. Carving is cut new by hand to match what sits beside it. Cane and rush are woven back in the pattern the seat was made for, and a piece that was painted is painted again rather than stripped to a wood it was never meant to show.
Not everything old is better. Modern adhesives and abrasives are used where they honestly outperform what they replaced. The test is always the piece itself: will the repair hold, and does it still read as the piece it was.

How the Work Gets Decided
Four rules do most of the deciding. They are the difference between a repair and a disguise.
-
Sound wood first
Split, softened or worm-eaten timber is stabilised before anything is asked to hold in it. A joint cut into weak wood fails again. One cut into sound wood holds.
-
The original joint
A chair loosens because its glue has crystallised, not because it is short of a screw. The joint comes apart, the old glue comes off, and the frame goes back together square.
-
Matched, not replaced
Losses are cut from the same species with the grain running the same way, then coloured to the surface around them. The best patch is the one you cannot find.
-
The honest no
Some pieces are worth less than the work they need, and some are better left wearing their age. If that is the answer, you hear it before anything comes apart.
Visiting
Coming to the Shop
The shop is at 10B Regency Dr in Wylie, off Highway 78. Call before you drive out: most pieces can be judged from photographs, and a large one may not need to travel at all.
If it fits in the car, bring it, and bring every broken part with it, however small. A splinter of moulding is far easier to put back than to carve again.
